Power Supply Size Guide (Wide vs. Narrow)

Why Some Power Supplies Block Adjacent Outlets

Plug-in power supplies (wall-mount adaptors with integral mains pins) vary significantly in their body width. When two power supplies are used side by side in a standard double outlet, a supply that is too wide will physically displace the adjacent plug, preventing a safe connection. Understanding the difference between narrow and wide power supplies helps you specify the right product for your installation and avoid the frustration of blocked outlets on site.

Page Index

Narrow Power Supplies (<43.8mm Wide)

A narrow power supply measures less than 43.8mm across the widest point of its body, perpendicular to the pins. Two narrow supplies can be used side by side in a standard Australian double outlet without mechanical interference. Both will seat fully and make safe electrical contact.

Most modern switch-mode plug-packs sold for networking equipment, routers, access points, CCTV cameras, and consumer electronics are designed to the narrow profile specifically so they can be used in double outlets without blocking the adjacent socket.

Wide Power Supplies (>54mm Wide)

A wide power supply measures more than 54mm across. When plugged into one socket of a standard double outlet, the body of a wide supply extends past the centreline of the outlet face and physically overlaps the adjacent socket. A second plug cannot seat correctly, or cannot insert at all.

Attempting to force a second plug alongside a wide supply risks damaging the outlet face, creating an intermittent connection, or leaving a plug partially inserted and exposed. Wide supplies are typically found on older or higher-power plug-pack units.

Classification Body Width Fits Double Outlet? Blocks Adjacent Socket?
Narrow <43.8mm Yes, two side by side No
Wide >54mm One only Yes

Double Adaptors and Power Boards

The wide vs narrow issue also applies when using double adaptors and power boards. A wide plug-pack plugged into one socket of a double adaptor will block the second socket entirely. On a multi-outlet power board, a wide supply plugged into one outlet may block both adjacent outlets depending on the outlet spacing on that specific board.

When specifying power supplies for rack cabinets, communications enclosures, or any installation where multiple plug-packs will be used in close proximity, confirm the body width of each supply before installation. Using narrow supplies throughout avoids outlet conflicts and keeps installations clean.

Choosing the Right Size

If you need to use a power supply in a double outlet alongside another plug or supply, always confirm the body width before purchase. The product dimensions in our catalogue listings include the body width measurement where relevant.

If you are unsure whether a specific supply is narrow or wide, measure the body at its widest point perpendicular to the pins. Under 43.8mm is narrow and will fit alongside another plug. Over 54mm is wide and will block the adjacent socket.

For installations requiring multiple power supplies in a confined space, consider a rack-mount or DIN-rail power supply instead of multiple wall-mount plug-packs. This eliminates the outlet conflict entirely and provides a cleaner, more professional installation.
